This is the only documented hand-made die struck variety dated 1843 (P), although there are other 1843s with mintmarks. Only a few examples of this variety have yet surfaced in my photo documentation. The example shown was struck on a copper planchet and has less than 5% of the remaining gold plating remaining. The center of the reverse has some type of black gunk on it that I have not attempted to remove. The overall die quality was very good and could have deceived several people until the underlying planchet metal was exposed. I do not see a lot of 1840s quarter eagles, so collector availability is generally limited and scarce.
