This is 1 of 2 documented 1858-dated hand-made, die struck counterfeit quarter eagle varieties. This variety was struck on a brass planchet and gold plated, and is diagnostic with its small and somewhat widely spaced date. Some of ther reverse lettering was not well-spaced, thus overlapping each other, and some letters were repunched.
This example shows a reasonably attractive obverse (it looks better in hand) with the gold plating bubbled-surface, however the reverse has some wear, tear, and likely test-scratches. Overall this is an affordable example of this scarcer of the two 1858-varieties. This example was also once owned by renowned collector Mike Ringo.
