This is a contemporary counterfeit 1858-S Seated half dollar transfer die. The planchet is brass and there is still some patches of silver plating on both sides. The details are weak which is common of transfer dies from this period. This is 1 of 2 documented 1858-S half dollar transfer die varieties. This variety has a clockwise rotated mintmark on the reverse which is different from the other variety with an upright S-mintmark. Only 3 examples of this variety have been documented, and 1 of those examples is located in the American Numismatic Society (ANS) collection.
