The 1861/88 3cS variety comes from the Star-Shield Amateur family, which includes other 1861-dated varieties and an 1858. This is the only counterfeit 3cS which has extraneous digits originally punched in below the date; it is suspected the die sinker just messed up on the position and orientation of the date digits. This variety is fairly rare, and certainly one of the most interested counterfeit 3cS varieties so far identified.

This example is far and away the nicest piece I've ever been able to offer. The strike and details are fully XF. The overdate is bold and crisp. The planchet surfaces are flawless.
