This 1861 'C-1' variety of gold dollar contemporary counterfeit is 1 of 2 such hand-made die varieties with this date, both using a Type 3 style obverse with a Type 2 style reverse. This variety was struck in brass. About half of the fewer than 10 documented examples of this variety exhibit the central weakness shown on the reverse of this example. Only a couple examples of this variety are known nicer than this piece.
