The 1861 'C-3' Quarter Eagle contemporary counterfeit was made by the same counterfeiter that made the 1861 'C-2' $2.50, also currently available at the time this description is being written. However, while the 'C-2' variety was struck in brass, the 'C-3' variety was struck on a silver planchet. This is the ONLY documented and confirmed contemporary counterfeit quarter eagle variety struck on a silver planchet; silver planchets were more commonly used on Half Eagle counterfeit varieties (9 such varieties have thus been documented).
 
Fewer than 5 examples of this variety have thus far been documented. This example, while a bit beat up and partially bent, is in average condition between the few examples seen.
