1921 Z1-A Walking Liberty half dollar Contemporary Counterfeit

Hand-made, die struck counterfeit Walking Liberty half dollars are rare, and that this piece is a key-date is even cooler.  These varieties were struck on sterling silver planchets. This is 1 of 8 documented hand-made die WLH counterfeit varieties, and is associated with the Fat Motto family.

This die work on this family is quite good. A pick-up-point for this variety is the reverse position of the mountain pine stem relative to the position of the B in PLURIBUS; on the counterfeit the leaf touches the center of the B, while on the genuine it is to the right-edge of the B.  Other lettering and details are also not exactly the same (but very close) as the genuine.  The reverse of this die was also used on a 1917 counterfeit WLH variety too, thus making this a small family of counterfeit WLHs.

This example has all design details bold, especially the date which can be weak at times. Some of the peripheral lettering and rim run together, but this is not unusual. A thin scratch across the top of the obverse is the only blemish on this piece, and it barely visible in hand.
