The 1924-S/S/S transfer die counterfeit (TD.1-TD.A) is one of the relatively rare die struck counterfeit silver U.S. coins from the 20th century. It is hypothesized that these were made during the Great Depression of the 1930s. These were struck in coin or sterling silver (the silver content difference being negligible). The S-mintmark was either struck or engraved 3 times; the adjacent distortion of the stars would suggest that the original host coin may have been struck 3 times, with slight rotations per strike, resulting in the doubling seen in this area of the obverse.
This is a great example of this variety with nice and clean surfaces. Examples of this variety do not show up all that much. My current census information has documented some 10-12 examples, with an estimated survival of at least 50 pieces.
